South African mining and waste infrastructure runs on drainage geosynthetics — heap leach pads, tailings facilities, landfill caps and interlayers all move water and leachate through geonets and geocomposites — and the domestic supply base is thin, so the product imports. India is a natural origin: HDPE geonet extrusion at competitive tonnage pricing with the test data mines and consultants demand. We manufacture biplanar geonet at our Gujarat plant and ship to South African geosynthetic distributors and project suppliers; this page covers the practical import picture.
What South African projects order
The core product is biplanar HDPE geonet — two sets of crossing ribs forming a drainage core 5 to 7.5mm thick — specified by transmissivity at normal load, not by weight alone. Mining specs read like laboratory reports: transmissivity under load, creep reduction factors, polymer density and stress crack resistance, all of which belong in the submittal rather than the brochure. Geocomposites — geonet bonded with filter geotextile on one or both faces — carry much of the volume because they arrive as a finished drainage layer, and we supply both forms from the same core production. Rolls run around 2 to 2.5 metres wide by 30 to 50 metres, and container loading is weight-bound rather than cube-bound: a 40-foot container takes roughly 20-24 tonnes depending on construction.
Duty, VAT and SARS process
Geonet classifies under HS 3926.90 (or 3920 family lines depending on form), and here South Africa differs sharply from the Gulf and US: plastics articles attract double-digit duty — commonly in the 15-20% band — plus 15% VAT at import. The duty is a real line on the costing sheet, which is exactly why origin pricing matters: Indian tonnage pricing absorbs a share of that duty and still lands competitively against other origins, but a sloppy quote that ignores the duty band will embarrass somebody later. Imports are declared via the SAD 500 with your clearing agent; where an import permit or ITAC involvement applies to a specific line, your agent confirms before shipment rather than at the wharf. We supply invoice, packing list, origin certificate and full test reports — the pack SARS-registered importers and mine procurement teams expect.
Spec practice and test data
South African geosynthetic procurement follows international consulting practice — GRI test methods and manufacturer data reviewed by the engineer of record. The documents that decide awards: transmissivity under normal load with reduction factors, creep data, polymer density, carbon black content and stress crack resistance. We supply the full set from accredited laboratory testing, and for projects that specify independent verification we coordinate third-party testing before shipment. Mine procurement teams also audit source factories more often than other sectors — our Gujarat plant receives such visits routinely and supports video audits when travel does not suit the schedule.
Route, ports and lead times
Mundra or Nhava Sheva to Durban runs roughly two to three weeks port to port — Durban handles the mining heartland and the bulk of geosynthetic landings; Cape Town serves Western Cape waste and water projects. Clearance adds 2 to 5 days with a competent agent. Production runs 10 to 15 days for standard constructions, longer for geocomposite bonding programs. First orders land in five to seven weeks door to door; repeat stock orders for distributors run four to five. Project buyers should align delivery with liner-installation windows: geonet that arrives before the geomembrane crew does sits in storage and collects handling damage, so sequence the two together.
Documents and terms
Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, batch test reports (transmissivity, creep, polymer data) and REACH-style material declarations where the consultant asks. FOB Mundra and CIF Durban or Cape Town are routine. Related products: our geonet product page lists constructions and widths, pond liner and geomembrane is the companion layer on most of the same specs, and our guide to importing PP woven bags into South Africa covers the duty landscape for other polymer categories from India.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the total import cost burden in South Africa?
Duty in the 15-20% band for plastics articles plus 15% VAT — materially higher than Gulf or US entries, which is why origin pricing and duty-inclusive landed comparisons matter before you award.
Geonet or geocomposite?
Geocomposite — geonet bonded with filter geotextile — is the default on most drainage specs because it installs as one layer; bare geonet appears where the design adds separation separately.
Which test reports do you supply?
Transmissivity under load with reduction factors, creep, density, carbon black, ESCR and tensile — from accredited labs, with third-party testing coordinated when the engineer requires it.
How long is delivery to a mine site?
Production 10 to 15 days, ocean two to three weeks to Durban, clearance 2 to 5 days, then linehaul. Plan six to eight weeks door to site on first orders.
