Geocell is the geosynthetic that looks simplest and earns the most: a collapsed honeycomb of HDPE strips that expands on site into a three-dimensional confinement system, holding gravel on slopes, stabilising access roads and turning soft ground into buildable surface. US civil and site-development contractors buy it by the project, and the supply base is global — India among the competitive origins on both price and consistent strip quality. We manufacture HDPE geocell at our Gujarat plant and ship to American distributors and site-supply specialists by the container; this page covers what a US import actually involves.
What US contractors order
The spec conversation starts with cell depth — 75mm for light surface stabilisation, 100mm as the workhorse, 150mm and 200mm for load platforms and slope armour — and wall type: perforated walls drain and friction-lock into infill, solid walls serve containment-leaning applications. Textured vs smooth strip surface, and single vs triple strips per cell wall, follow the load case. Geocell ships collapsed, strapped in bundles on pallets; a 40-foot high cube carries a very large deployed footprint because the product is largely air in transport — which is precisely why importing makes sense versus domestic fabrication. Anchor details, ATRA keys and staples ride as accessories, and we quote them with the panels so the site is not improvising connections.
The duty stack, line by line
Geocell classifies under HS 3926.90 (other articles of plastics) in most consignments, with Column 1 general rates around 3% to 5.3% depending on the line the broker files. Add the Merchandise Processing Fee at 0.3464% and Harbor Maintenance Fee at 0.125% for vessel cargo. The 2026 change that every importer is costing in: an additional Section 301 action applying to a long list of economies including India, in the order of 10% on top of base rates — confirm the live figure with your customs broker before quoting, because the level moved during 2026 and may move again. Even with the surcharge, Indian geocell typically lands below domestic fabrication for standard depths, and the air-freight advantage of collapsed transport is untouched by tariff lines. ISF 10+2 is filed before loading; we supply invoice, packing list, origin documents and test reports in the same week production closes.
Standards and DOT submittal practice
There is no single federal geocell standard; the working truth is project submittals. State DOTs, rail owners and site civil engineers review manufacturer data — polymer density, environmental stress crack resistance, strip tensile, junction strength, seam peel — against the project spec, and the approved product gets locked. We supply the full data package with test results from accredited labs, and for projects that want third-party verification we coordinate independent testing before shipment. The practical advice for a first-time US importer: get the submittal package approved before you book the container, not after — geocell that arrives unapproved is inventory, geocell approved in advance is schedule.
Ports, route and lead times
Savannah is the workhorse landing for Southeast site-work projects, Houston serves the energy and Texas market, NY-NJ the Northeast, LA/Long Beach the West. East Coast transit from Mundra runs 28 to 35 days port to port; clearance 2 to 4 days. Production runs 10 to 15 days for standard depths and textures, longer for project-specific strip specs. Because geocell is bulky-but-light, container selection is about cube not weight — we load optimise every order and tell you the deployed square metres per container before you commit, which is the number your estimator actually wants.
Documents and terms
Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, polymer and performance test reports, and the submittal data package. FOB Mundra and CIF to any US port are routine, DDP for distributors who sell landed. Related products on the same specs: our geocell product page lists depths and wall types, geonet drainage pairs with geocell on layered systems, and our guide to importing stretch film into the USA shows how we structure other industrial-film entries for US buyers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What duty will we pay on geocell from India?
Base 3% to 5.3% by HTS line, plus MPF and HMF, plus the 2026 Section 301 additional action on Indian-origin goods of roughly 10%. Your broker confirms the live stack before entry.
Perforated or solid walls?
Perforated for drainage and infill friction — the default on roads and slopes; solid where containment or finer infill argues for it. The project spec decides; we quote both.
How much area does one container cover?
Depends on depth and cell size — a 40-foot high cube of 100mm geocell deploys into tens of thousands of square metres. We give you the deployed-area figure per container before you order.
How long is the lead time?
Production 10 to 15 days, ocean 28 to 35 days East Coast, clearance 2 to 4 days. Plan six to eight weeks door to door, and get the submittal approved in parallel.
