HDPE sheet is the material behind a thousand unglamorous products: tank walls, dock bumpers, cutting surfaces, playground panels, truck bed liners, crawler mats. US fabricators buy it in 4x8 sheets and cut their living out of it, and the factory-direct question is always the same one: can you match what I already run, at a better number, consistently? We extrude HDPE sheet in house, so here is the grade-and-price conversation we have with fabricators.
Grades: know which one you are buying
Virgin HDPE is the spec-grade material: consistent melt, predictable welding and forming, food-contact capable per FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. It is the right answer for tank fabrication, food equipment and anything certified.
Repro-grade sheet reprocesses post-industrial material at a meaningful discount. Color drifts, melt varies slightly, and it is honest value for non-critical work: stage platforms, Temporary protection, utility parts. We label grades plainly and quote accordingly, because a fabricator who discovers repro in a certified build pays for it in rejected inspections.
Thickness, size and color
Sheet runs from 1 mm up to 30 mm and beyond; 4x8 feet is the US default with cut-to-size available since we slit in house. Black and white are stock; color runs on volume orders. Textured and smooth faces, and matte versus gloss, are finish options rather than exotic requests.
Indicative pricing
| Format | Indicative FOB |
|---|---|
| 4x8 ft, 3 mm, black, repro | $28 - $45 |
| 4x8 ft, 3 mm, black, virgin | $38 - $62 |
| 4x8 ft, 6 mm, virgin | $72 - $115 |
| 4x8 ft, 12 mm, virgin | $145 - $230 |
Sheets palletize flat and containers weight out around 20 to 22 tons, so full-container pricing is where factory-direct genuinely separates from distribution. Production is 2 to 4 weeks by thickness; ocean 4 to 6 weeks East Coast.
Fabrication notes from the extrusion floor
HDPE welds with matching HDPE rod on extrusion or hot-air welders, and joint prep matters more than brand of welder: clean, beveled, and at the right temperature the joint is parent-material strength. CNC routing is straightforward, and HDPE machines cleanly without the melting some plastics suffer. For UV-exposed installs, ask for the UV package at extrusion rather than hoping the black pigment carries it.
Fabricator questions
Can you hold thickness tolerance tight?
Yes, and it matters for insert molding and CNC work; state your tolerance on the RFQ and we confirm it in writing with the lot certificate.
Mixed loads?
Sheets of mixed thickness and colors pack on the same container; that is a routine split for us.
