Custom Printed PP Woven Bags: Branding Options for US Buyers

A printed woven sack is a billboard that rides from the plant to the shelf to the customer's barn. For US seed, feed, pet food, fertilizer and salt brands, the print quality on a 50 lb bag often decides the private label conversation before the price does. We print woven polypropylene in-house, and here is the plain-English version of how custom branding works, what it costs, and where buyers waste money.

Two print routes, two different results

Flexo printing inks the woven fabric directly after weaving. It runs 1 to 3 colors economically, handles logos, product photos in coarse form and regulatory text, and adds roughly $0.05 to $0.15 per bag over natural fabric. Setup is plates, typically $35 to $90 per color, one-time. For agri and feed brands, flexo on white opaque fabric covers 90% of the market.

Rotogravure with BOPP lamination is the photo-grade route. Artwork is gravure-printed on BOPP film and laminated onto the woven body, giving full-coverage imagery, gradient color and a scuff-resistant surface. Plates cost more ($120 to $250 per color) and the bag lands at $0.35 to $0.80 depending on size, but the shelf presence is a different category. Pet food and premium seed lines usually justify it within one season.

Artwork that prints clean, first time

Send vector files (AI, EPS or PDF) with fonts outlined and colors specified in Pantone. On fabric, halftones need higher line counts than paper print, so avoid fine gradients in flexo. Keep critical text at least 8 pt. If your design was built for a paper sack, ask us to review it before committing plates; small changes at artwork stage cost nothing, changes after plating cost plates.

What buyers get wrong about color

Natural polypropylene fabric is pale yellow-beige. A white that looks pure on screen prints slightly cream unless the design adds a white flood underlay. Dark colors read well on natural fabric; light pastels do not. This is why we proof on the actual fabric, not on paper. A printed sample bag in your hand before the container order is the cheapest brand insurance available.

Pricing and the private label path

Print optionAdded cost per bagOne-time setup
1-color flexo on natural$0.04 - $0.08$35 - $70
3-color flexo on white opaque$0.10 - $0.15$105 - $240
Rotogravure BOPP, full coverageincluded in $0.35 - $0.80 bag$480 - $1,250

Minimums follow container economics: one 20-ft box per dedicated print. Plates stay at our plant, so repeat orders skip setup entirely and just pay bag cost. Lead time is production plus plate-making, 4 to 5 weeks, then ocean transit.

Quick answers

Can you match my exact brand color?

Within one Pantone shade on flexo, and closer on gravure. We run a wet proof on final fabric for approval before the full run.

Does printing weaken the bag?

No. Flexo ink sits on the tape surface; BOPP lamination actually adds scuff and moisture resistance. Neither touches seam strength.
