Pet food brands figured this out first, and the rest of the food aisle is catching up: a BOPP woven bag photographs like a pouch and hauls like a sack. The construction sandwiches a rotogravure-printed BOPP film onto a woven polypropylene body, so you get magazine-quality print on the outside and industrial strength on the inside. We laminate BOPP onto our own woven fabric daily, and this is the guide we give US brand teams comparing it against paper and plain flexo sacks.
Why the print looks different
Rotogravure prints on smooth film, not fabric. Gradients, food photography, fine regulatory text and tight brand colors all survive because the ink sits on BOPP, then the film is laminated to the woven body. Compare that to flexo on fabric, where halftones soften and fine type thickens. If your brand competes on the shelf against national labels, this is usually the deciding difference, and it is why BOPP dominates premium pet food, rice, flour and seed packaging worldwide.
Structure options worth knowing
- Standard: 20-25 micron BOPP reverse-printed film, laminated to 65-90 GSM woven PP body.
- With inner liner: adds a poly liner for fat-rich or aroma-sensitive products.
- Matte or gloss finish: matte reads premium and hides handling scuffs; gloss maximizes color pop.
- Bottom formats: sewn, pasted valve (for high-speed fillers), or pinch-bottom for shelf-square bags.
The moisture argument over paper
BOPP laminated woven bags shrug off humidity, brief rain on a loading dock and condensation inside a container, where kraft paper sacks wick and weaken. For Gulf Coast and Southeast distribution, that difference shows up as fewer caked or spoiled loads. Paper still wins on some retail sustainability scorecards, which is a real consideration; we make both, and the honest framing is shelf impact and moisture resistance versus recycled-content branding.
Indicative pricing for US buyers
| Format | Indicative FOB (per bag) |
|---|---|
| 10-20 lb size, standard coverage | $0.28 - $0.48 |
| 40-50 lb size, full coverage | $0.42 - $0.80 |
| Premium (matte, valve, liner), add | $0.08 - $0.18 |
Gravure cylinders run $120 to $250 per color and stay at our plant for repeat runs. Minimums follow container economics, one 20-ft box per design. Prepress goes: artwork review, digital proof, then a physical printed sample bag by air before the production run. That sample step protects both of us and takes about a week.
Brand team questions, answered
How many colors can we run?
Up to 10 on gravure, though most designs live comfortably in 6 to 8. More colors mean more cylinders, so consolidation saves setup cost without hurting the look.
Will the print survive pallet rubbing?
Reverse printing puts ink under the film, so surface abrasion hits the film, not the ink. This is why BOPP outlasts direct-print sacks in warehouse handling.
Can we mix sizes of one design in a container?
Yes. Same cylinders across sizes is common; we plan the film layout so artwork scales cleanly.
Constructions and finishes are on the BOPP Bags and Rolls page. If your line is simpler, compare with flexo printed woven bags, and for base sack economics see the PP woven price guide.
