Weed Barrier Fabric Wholesale: 3.2 oz Ground Cover Pricing

Landscape contractors judge a weed barrier by two moments: how it lays on install day, and what the bed looks like three summers later. Woven polypropylene ground cover wins both when it is speced right, and loses both when it is bought on price alone. We weave ground cover fabric and ship it to distributors, nurseries and greenhouses across the US, so here is the contractor-grade version of what to check before ordering rolls.

Weight, weave and what they buy you

The US market standard is 3.2 oz per square yard woven PP, black, with printed grid lines for plant spacing. Heavier 5.0 oz fabric exists for driveways and heavy foot traffic, but for beds and nursery floors, 3.2 oz is the workhorse. What matters more than weight in the quote: UV stabilization package (this decides whether the fabric is dead in two seasons or still working at five), tensile in both directions (cheap fabric tears on rocks during install), and water permeability (woven fabric passes water by design; coated impostors do not, and roots suffocate).

Roll formats and install math

Standard rolls run 6 ft x 300 ft, with 3, 4 and 15-foot widths for nursery rows and greenhouse floors. Coverage is simple square footage: a 6x300 roll covers 1,800 square feet. Plan staples at roughly one per 3 to 4 square feet on open installs, more on slopes and wind-exposed sites; skimping on pins is how edges lift in the first storm. Overlap rows 3 to 4 inches, which is already included in most contractors' coverage math, and cut X-slits rather than removing squares so soil stays covered.

Indicative pricing

SpecIndicative FOB
3.2 oz woven PP, UV treated$0.07 - $0.11 / sq ft
5.0 oz heavy duty, add+$0.03 - $0.05 / sq ft
Printed grid lines, add+$0.005 - $0.01 / sq ft

Fabric is light and bulky, so containers cube out: a 40-ft high cube carries enormous roll counts, which keeps freight per square foot almost negligible and makes imported fabric price-competitive even after duty. Production is 3 to 4 weeks; ocean 4 to 6 weeks East Coast.

Where contractors get burned, and how not to

The two failures we replace every year: fabric without a real UV package used above grade (goes brittle, fibers migrate into mulch), and fabric laid without ground preparation (rocks telegraph through, and installers blame the fabric). Buy the UV spec in writing, prep the grade, and the same roll looks tidy in year four. Under decorative rock, use the heavier 5 oz and a thicker stone layer; the fabric is doing structural work there, not just weed exclusion.

Buyer questions

Does it let water through?

Woven PP passes water by design; that is its advantage over plastic sheet. If a quote describes a coated fabric as weed barrier, ask how irrigation reaches roots, because it usually does not.

Greenhouse floor use?

Yes, and grid lines help spacing. White or white-black grounds reflect light back into the canopy, which growers of light-hungry crops appreciate.
