If your customs broker has AI-ECTA paperwork in order — and we provide the origin documents our side — the duty line mostly disappears. On top sits 10% GST, calculated on the customs value plus duty plus freight, which every importer pays regardless of preference claims. Get the classification right the first time; a reclassification dispute with the Australian Border Force costs more than the duty ever did.
Biosecurity: the step that trips new importers
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) cares less about the bags and more about what travels with them. Every container needs a packing declaration declaring the container clean and free of contamination, and any timber used in packing must be ISPM 15 compliant. These documents cost nothing to prepare correctly and weeks to fix if wrong. We ship on new or one-trip containers with plastic dunnage where possible, which keeps DAFF inspections uneventful. What to spec before you order
Australian buyers standardise around the 240L wheelie bin — the council bin in every suburb — so 240L liners in 50-80 micron are the anchor SKU, with 1200L bulk liners for councils and waste yards at 100 micron and above. Kitchen and office tidy bags run 18-36L in 15-25 micron. State single-use plastic bans target lightweight carrier bags, not heavy duty bin liners, but WA, SA and NSW rules each have their own definitions — worth a ten-minute check with your state EPA if you also retail carrier-type products.
