Another approach is the development of biohazard bags using bio-based polyethylene derived from renewable feedstocks such as sugarcane ethanol. Bio-based polyethylene has the same chemical and physical properties as conventional polyethylene, meaning it provides the same level of performance and safety, but it has a significantly lower carbon footprint because the carbon in the material was recently captured from the atmosphere by the sugarcane plants rather than being extracted from underground fossil reserves.
