Stretch Film Calculator
Find out exactly how much stretch film each pallet consumes, how many rolls you need every month, and what your film is really costing you. Most warehouses over-wrap by 20-40% — thick film “just to be safe”, too little pre-stretch, and no measurement of grams per pallet. Enter your pallet size, wrapping style and film spec below: the calculator estimates film per pallet, monthly consumption, roll count and annual spend, then shows the savings from the right gauge and machine-grade pre-stretch.
1. Pallet & Load
2. Wrapping Style
Manual wraps typically 30–70% pre-stretch; machine turntable 150–250%.
3. Film & Roll

Savings Estimate
Switching to 17 micron with machine-grade 200% pre-stretch could save about ₹43,956/year (58% of your current film spend) at 200 pallets/month.
Estimate only — actual usage depends on load profile, wrap pattern and equipment. Machine upgrade cost not included.
How to use this calculator
- Measure one pallet: length, width and wrapped height in metres, and how many pallets you wrap per month.
- Match your wrapping style: manual hand wrap or machine turntable, with your typical pre-stretch percentage.
- Enter your current film: gauge (micron), roll width, roll weight and the price you pay per kg. The result cards update instantly.
Stretch film gauge chart (micron guide)
| Load type | Machine grade | Manual grade | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light, uniform | 12-15 micron | 15-17 micron | Cartons, bottled drinks, tissue |
| Medium | 15-17 micron | 17-20 micron | Boxed goods, drums, sacks |
| Heavy | 20-23 micron | 23-25 micron | Metal parts, bricks, dense bags |
| Sharp / abrasive edges | 23-25 micron + edge board | 25 micron + edge board | Machinery, glass, scrap bales |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate stretch film consumption per pallet?
Multiply the pallet perimeter (2 x length + 2 x width) by the wrap height to get the wrapped area, add extra revolutions for the top and bottom, multiply by the film thickness in metres and by LLDPE density (920 kg/m3), then divide by your pre-stretch factor. Our calculator above does this instantly, including overlap and roll maths.
What gauge (micron) of stretch film should I use?
Light uniform loads work with 12-15 micron machine film, medium palletized loads with 15-20 micron, heavy loads with 20-23 micron, and sharp or abrasive loads need 23-25 micron plus edge protection. Hand wrap is usually 17-23 micron, machine film 12-20 micron with high pre-stretch.
How much does machine pre-stretch save?
Pre-stretch reduces the film mass proportionally: 100% pre-stretch halves film consumption, 200% cuts it to one-third. That is why switching a manual line (30-70% stretch) to a machine turntable or rotary arm at 200%+ typically reduces film spend by 40-55% on the same pallets.
What is the standard stretch film roll size?
Common hand rolls are 500 mm wide, 300 m long, around 2 kg net weight (17-20 micron). Machine rolls are 500 mm wide, 1,000-1,500 m long, 10-15 kg net. Larger 750 mm rolls exist for wide or tall pallets.
Is thinner stretch film always cheaper?
No. Below the gauge your load requires, film tears and loads fail in transit, which costs far more than the film saved. Optimise gauge against load weight, edge sharpness and handling rather than buying the thinnest film available.
