Barricade tape is the most visible safety product on a job site and the least specified. Crews grab a roll, string it up, and nobody thinks about it until a roll snaps in wind or the print fades in a fortnight. We extrude and print barricade tape for US distributors and safety supply houses, and the difference between a forgettable roll and a good one comes down to three decisions: film thickness, print quality and legend choice. Here they are, with the pricing that goes with them.
Thickness decides whether the roll survives the week
Economy tape runs 1.5 to 2 mil, fine for short events and dry conditions. Job site reality, wind, abrasion across fence wire, UV, eats thin film fast. Our standard is 2 to 2.5 mil on 3-inch width x 1,000-foot rolls, which is the combination US contractors repurchase most. Heavier 3 mil exists for long-duration sites and restringing-tolerant crews. Width stays 3 inches as the US convention; some utility buyers spec 6 inch for high-visibility barricades.
Stock legends versus custom print
Stock rolls, yellow CAUTION, red DANGER, orange WARNING, ship in cases of 12 or 24 and cover most needs. Custom printing is where tape becomes communication: company name and phone on every barrier, bilingual English-Spanish legends (genuinely useful on US crews and increasingly standard), or site-specific messages like BURIED FIBER or RESTRICTED AREA. Flexo print on our line handles one to three colors cleanly; plate setup applies and stays on file. Indicative FOB: stock tape $0.45 to $0.85 per roll, custom printed $0.65 to $1.20 depending on colors and coverage, cases of 12, before freight.
Color discipline is part of the safety system
Red DANGER for immediate hazards and heavy equipment zones, yellow CAUTION for general warnings, orange for utility and excavation marking, purple for reclaimed water lines in states that use it. Mixing these casually trains crews to ignore color, which is exactly backward. Safety supply distributors who maintain legend consistency per customer account tend to keep those accounts for years, because crews get used to reading their tape.
Supply and logistics
Tape cases cube efficiently: a 40-ft container carries well over a million feet of tape, so freight per roll is cents. Production for stock colors is 2 weeks; custom print 3 to 4 weeks including plate approval. Ocean transit 4 to 6 weeks East Coast. Dispenser-box packaging (rolls pay out from the center) is available and crews genuinely prefer it; mention it when you request quotes.
Buyer questions
Does printed tape fade outdoors?
All PE tape chalks eventually, but UV packages and quality inks push usable life to months of continuous exposure. We print with inks formulated for outdoor film, not paper ink adapted to it, and the difference shows up in week six.
Can we get sampling before a full case run?
Yes, printed sample rolls ship by air for safety review before the production order, usually inside a week of artwork approval.
